The Magicians
by Lev Grossman
When i first found about the book, i was like "what adult version of Harry Potter? I've got to read this book. The book was good but not as good as i had in my mind.
The guy Quentin loves magic and is secretly obsessed with magic. I thought there would be some actual magic spells when he enters the magic school. But to my disappointment, they don't even use wands. Seriously? I was hoping for something like WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA and whoosh....
But no. it's just like a normal academy with a difference that they study magic, nothing much. the half of the book is about within the academy literally. I really wanted to quit reading the book by the time Quentin was in his last year of his school. I have to say the second quarter of the book was quite boring. (you know I came to read about magic not some shitty school life) Then comes a twist : they find a portal to FILLORY. Then I was like Okay i'm finishing the book by today.
Thank God i didn't quit.
Coz they go on adventure to find the crown of the rulers of Fillory. They get help from many different half-humans-half animals and talking animals. Seriously i remember none of their names. i can think of one talking bear and a girl who does martial arts mixed with magic. Ok,How cool is that? You are one of the best martial artists in the land and you can do magic too. i'd kick someones face while i cast a spell and that guy would be like flying......
OK back to the story again, then they face The Beast who is revealed to be the main character of a fantasy book. Quentin's like "I always wanted to be like you and you turn out to be my worst enemy". He cowers to fight against The Beast's armies while his friends fight to fullest. Seriously, the main character is a coward? ugh....when he tries to fight against him, Alice comes forward to save the love of her life. She does some kind of spell and she starts burning and eventually killing the Beast and burning herself to death. Did the main girl just die?
So then Quentin's left in Fillory to recover. He recovers all thanks to centaurs and returns to the real world. Briefly after which he returns again to Fillory to rule it with Elliot, Janet and Julia. I don't think there was any necessity of having four thrones. And where the hell did Julia come from?
Okay let's sum up for now. Quentin goes to magic school and i don't have a freaking idea what they studied there without any wands or any spells. And he totally cowers when he can show his skills and then the female lead dies. And and and is Julia gonna be like from NO ONE in the first book to the female lead in the second book? why? Don't they try to bring Alice back? Was Alice just a sidekick?
A lot of questions at the end of the book. Hope to find those in the next books.
